Don't drop it cause it may damage it's calibration.

Hmmm,In terms of features, readings and ease-of-use, the digital multimeter wins the race.
That said, analogue multimeters still have their merits, and are worth considering if you need a cheaper multimeter solution.

What is the basic or common difference between the Analog Multitester and the Digital Multitester ?

Yes Smile

Appliance Testers
Appliance testers are much more sophisticated instruments than the typical “two leads and a bulb” testers used for voltage and continuity tests. Appliance testers combine common tests used to ensure the safety of electrical appliances and tools.

Old or poorly maintained electrical tools and appliances can become a safety hazard, potentially causing injury to personnel. Regularly testing electrical equipment is a safe practice against costly repairs, and may reduce liability.

There is no standard set of tests included with tool and appliance testers. Most however, include some combination of the following:

Earth bond and continuity tests
Insulation test
Touch current test
Differential leakage test
Substitute / alternative leakage test
Functional load test
Extension and IEC power cords
Hi-pot flash test

Phase Rotation Testers

Phase rotation testers are used to determine the rotation direction of polyphase electrical systems to ensure equipment is connected properly to the mains power supply. Polyphase electrical systems, usually 3-phase, are common in industrial settings to efficiently and economically satisfy the massive electrical needs of the large motors found in such settings.

Analog refers to circuits in which quantities such as voltage or current vary at a continuous rate. When you turn the dial of a potentiometer, for example, you change the resistance by a continuously varying rate. The resistance of the potentiometer can be any value between the minimum and maximum allowed by the pot.
In digital electronics, quantities are counted rather than measured. There’s an important distinction between counting and measuring. When you count something, you get an exact result. When you measure something, you get an approximate result.

I don't know how to maintain other testers but here is the things to avoid damaging a DMM, steer clear of these mistakes
Surprised
• Using the wrong jacks. At a nuclear power plant, an electrician turned his DMM into a molten mass. He accomplished this job-ending feat by measuring from a 480V bus to ground while having his test leads plugged into the current jacks. That 2A fuse isn’t designed to protect against this sort of abuse.

• Using the wrong setting. Most meters have some protection against this. For example, you have the DMM set on the 20VDC scale, but are measuring 120VAC. This typically will not harm the meter, you’ll just see “OL” on the screen. But try this stunt when the meter is providing power from its battery to the resistance terminals and you could seriously damage the meter.

• Storing it for “immediate access” rather than keeping it in a meter case. Most DMM cases have a pouch for the test leads, and you should use that. Wrapping the test leads around the meter and tossing it into a gang box (or shoving it into a tool pouch) is a sure way to degrade the integrity of those leads. If someone borrows your meter and returns it with the leads wrapped around it, replace the leads before using the meter.

• Using the wrong meter. If your meter is rated CATIII, don’t use it at the service switchgear. If it’s rated up to 1,000V, don’t even get it out around medium-voltage equipment.

And also ...

Using the current jacks. This isn’t in itself a problem, but if you’re in an industrial setting, it probably is. That’s because a typical DMM can measure small current values that are greatly exceeded by those you’d really care about in an industrial setting. Quick, how much current is that 100 HP motor drawing? Don’t use your DMM current jacks to try to read that. Instead, use a current clamp or other accessory. Typically, these will convert the current to a voltage you can read on the meter’s display as the amount of current. You can safely use the DMM’s current jacks, but be very aware of the application and environment before even considering doing so.

ekkoekko wrote:How would you know if your measuring tool is accurate?

If you are only interested in the accuracy of your system you probably want to use something like the maximum error. Your accuracy is then +/- Max error with the assumption that real errors are uniformly distributed within this range (a uniform distribution will often be an overestimation but is a simple option when no better information is available). However, this approach will often produce large errors due to systematic effects which can easily be corrected by fitting a curve (normally linear) through the plot of measured and true values.

Not necessarily though if you would like to have a tester that will last for a long time you can buy one.

For an accurate measurement and easy use, digital tester is better.
